Punjab’s Department of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has updated the eligibility criteria for the NRI quota in MBBS and BDS admissions. Now, in addition to actual NRIs and their children, close relatives of NRIs, including uncles, aunts, grandparents, and first-degree cousins, can apply for NRI quota seats in medical and dental colleges. This amendment aims to fill the many vacant NRI quota seats in the state. The revised guidelines ensure that these relatives are considered only after actual NRIs or their children have been given preference. If NRI seats still remain vacant after the second round of counseling, they will be offered to NEET-qualified foreign nationals, and any remaining seats will be converted to general category seats. The fee payments for NRI candidates must come from an NRI or NRE bank account. The amendment addresses the consistent issue of unfilled NRI seats in Punjab’s medical and dental colleges.
