The Karnataka government has requested the Centre to approve 508 additional MBBS seats in 22 autonomous government medical colleges under the Department of Medical Education, starting from the academic year 2025-26. These supernumerary seats would be allocated under a newly proposed 15% NRI quota. Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil emphasized that this initiative aligns with UGC guidelines and the National Education Policy 2020, which encourages the intake of international students in Indian institutions. The proposal aims to generate significant revenue, estimated at Rs 127 crore in the first year, to enhance the quality of education, infrastructure, and research at these institutions.
