HC Quashes Punjab’s New NRI Quota Rule for MBBS Admissions

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has nullified the Punjab government’s revised criteria for MBBS/BDS admissions under the NRI quota. The court found that expanding the definition of NRI to include distant relatives such as uncles, aunts, grandparents, and cousins could compromise the fairness of the admissions process and invite manipulation. The original intent of the NRI quota, aimed at benefiting genuine NRIs and their children, has been undermined by this broader definition.
